Awarded to the Armed Forces and the Merchant Navy for entry into an operational area in North Africa between 10 June 1940 and 12 May 1943. Also for service in Abyssinia, Somaliland, Eritrea and Malta. Service with the Eighth of First Armies, or in the operational area of North Africa 1942 - 43 entitled recipients to wear the appropriate bar on the ribbon.
